MAINTAINING A GOOD AND PURE CONSCIENCE

They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.

Romans 2: 15, NIV

The conscience is the discerning organ of our human spirit which distinguishes right from wrong. It does not often work by the influence of the knowledge stored in the mind. It is spontaneous and direct in judgment. Sometimes what our reasoning will justify our conscience will condemn. The conscience of a believer condemns all conduct which is contrary to Scripture and unnatural. If we do something wrong before God or man, we will have an evil conscience; a conscience with offence and condemnation. After we address the wrongdoing by genuine repentance and necessary restitution, we should apply the blood of Jesus Christ on our conscience for cleansing. This spiritual activity helps in freeing our conscience from guilt and condemnation.

Let us draw near with a true heart in all assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10: 22

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin.

1 John 1: 7

If you notice, the Scripture did not say that our heart should be washed. It simply said, “And the blood of Christ His son cleanses us from all sin.” When the Bible talks about the heart, it is not talking about the physical heart that pumps blood to the body, but rather refers to our human spirit, the core of our being. So in essence, when we confess our sins and apply the blood of Jesus in our heart it is our conscience that is purged and not the heart that pumps blood.

In the Scriptures, what God has promised man is a new heart and not an improved or cleansed heart. The heart of man cannot be washed, what it needs is a new one.

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you…

Ezekiel 36: 26

What a believer receives with the new birth experience is a brand new heart (a new and recreated human spirit). However, the believer should always submit his conscience for cleansing whenever it convicts him of a sin.  Having our conscience cleansed from sin is very important because the ability to hear the voice of God and the strength to doing the will of God come by always maintaining a good and pure conscience, one which is free of offence, guilt and condemnation.

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the Living God.

Hebrews 9: 14, NIV

The way to keep your conscience sound and in proper state for the maximum expression of the Holy Spirit power is by constantly applying the blood of Jesus Christ on it. It will make your communion with God effective and will always keep your intuition sensitive.
