THE HUMAN SPIRIT (Part 3)
| The spirit of man is so powerful that it can withstand the assault of the devil, adverse situations and fierce attacks. It has the ability to capture the past, present and future events in dreams, visions and trances. Ordinarily, these events are beyond human access, but through the faculties of the human spirit, they can be accessed. This ability is not limited to Christians only.
The story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, as narrated by James Ryle in his book, ‘A Dream Come True,’ clearly shows the efficacy of the human spirit, and how accurate it can be in capturing future events before they happen. This account is related here to drive this fact deep into your heart and make you become aware of the activities of your spirit.
“About ten days, I retired very late,” said President Lincoln to his wife. “I had been up waiting for important dispatches from the front. I could not have been long in bed when I fell into a slumber, for I was weary. I soon began to dream. There seemed to be a deathlike stillness about me. Then I heard subdued sobs, as if a number of people were weeping. I thought I left my bed and wandered downstairs. There the silence was broken by the same pitiful sobbing, but the mourners were invisible.”
“I went from room to room. No living person was in sight, but the same mournful sounds of distress met me as I passed along. It was light in all the rooms; every object was familiar to me, but where were all the people who were grieving as if their hearts would break? I was puzzled and alarmed. What could be the meaning of all this? Determined to find the cause of a state of things so mysterious and so shocking, I kept on until I arrived at the East Room, which I entered. There I met with a sickening surprise.”
“Before me was a corpse wrapped in funeral vestments. Around it were stationed soldiers who were acting as guards, and there was a throng of people, some gazing mournfully upon the corpse, whose face was covered, others weeping pitifully. ‘Who is dead in the White House?’ I demanded of one of the soldiers. ‘The president,’ was the answer, ‘he was killed by an assassin!’ Then there was a loud burst of grief from the crowd, which awoke me from my dreams.”
However, on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, a few days after his dream, John Booth shot the 16th president of United States of America at Ford’s Theatre in Washington. President Lincoln’s body lay in state in the East Room of the White House and on the 19th of the same month he received a military funeral.
From this story, it is obvious that exactly how his spirit captured the tragedy before it happened was the way it occurred. If a man’s spirit receives God’s Life and it is trained, it may not only capture events before they happen, but will equally provide strength to overcome tragedies. It is important to note here that every dream or vision is not a function of your spirit; some are physiological in nature.
It is possible to be a new creature and still have a weak spirit. Everything a Christian needs to grow in the Lord and manifest God’s glory is imparted into him at new birth. However, his growth can be stunted, and he will lack spiritual power if he does not deliberately apply spiritual principles for training his human spirit. Look at this prayer of Paul for the Ephesians.
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory to be strengthened with might by his spirit in the inner man.
Ephesians 3: 16
This Scripture implies that if a man can be strengthened in his inner man then he can also be weak in his inner man.
For which course we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4: 16
If the inward man can be renewed, then it can also grow weary. This does not mean the believer lacks God’s Life. He has God’s Life in the same measure and quality that Jesus had, but has not taken time to develop or grow his human spirit to the point where this Life will freely flow through him to cause a tangible change in his life and environment.
And the child grew and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
Luke 2: 40
Jesus, despite the fact He was fully God and fully man, still took time to develop Himself. As a child, He waxed strong in spirit. A Christian with a weak spirit will not be able to transmit enough Life and power from his spirit to his life and circumstances. The growth level of a believer’s human spirit is what determines the volume of God’s Life he can transmit or release. Our human spirit is the vehicle that transports all we have received from God to the outside world.
